My husband and I were traveling on an Asian adventure that visited four countries including: South Korea, China, Vietnam, and Singapore. We were there to complete a program requirement for the Thunderbird MBA program. The purpose of the trip was to interact with businesses in foreign countries to understand different business environments. On October 30, 2012, Thunderbird Online hosted the annual Lunch & Learn in partnership with the Arizona Technology Council. Thunderbird Professor Karen Walch presented on Cross-Cultural Communication and Negotiation. Dr. Walch has an academic background in international negotiation, cultural competencies, and global mindset. She is a world-renowned expert in cross-cultural communication, global communication, and international political economy.

I recently got married, and while I hadn’t thought about cross-cultural communication so much prior to meeting my husband, it now is a regular occurrence. My husband is Brazilian and has lived in the U.S. for nearly 6 years. He is well-traveled, and well-spoken in English. On a day-to-day basis we don’t have many communication mishaps. If we do, they aren’t anything major.
It has become increasingly important to understand the way different cultures interact in our global environment. Global education prepares working professionals to understand and interact within a culturally diverse and continually connected world.
